About the show
From the initial material impulse on the wall to the right of the entrance to the kinetic deconstruction in the shop window, WIND@CONSCIENCE20 marks a double in-situ installation that merges equally with the gallery's architecture and the multilayered history of Antwerp.
It is a trajectory of self-assertion, culminating in the radical 'Windmill Rotation' - the ultimate liberation of the viewers' gaze from verticality and architectural determinism.
Artist's Statement
My works emerge through an intuitive process of selection and precise construction, in which material, proportion, surface, space and visual codes become active elements of meaning.
I am interested in what happens when familiar things are brought into unfamiliar constellations. What happens when beauty, excess, attraction, discomfort, identity or/and cultural memory begin to interfere with one another?
Across objects, spatial installations, images, and interventions, I construct situations that do more than illustrate ideas: they make relationships perceptible — those between bodies and space, private and public experience, appropriation and transformation, visibility and concealment.
Personal experience often provides the starting point, but the work is not intended to remain autobiographical. Instead, it opens experiences and questions to other forms of perception, knowledgeand self-reflection. A work may introduce an experience that is unfamiliar to its audience (such as the existence of sexual violence between men) or use a seemingly simple shift in language (by adding punctuation) to turn a personal statement into an invitation to examine one’s own assumptions and experiences.
On the other hand, some works address gay experience and/or can be deliberately loud, provocative or confrontational. These invite deep engagement through shock or dialogue while maintaining a rigorous artistic ambition.
